This story has been entered by a volunteer on behalf of Norman Gray. The author has seen and agreed to the People's War House Rules.

I joined the Royal Navy at Pompy on 3rd September and found the country at war. I was snatched from my summer leave and sent to the Isle of Man, Douglas. I soon found myself along with other boys sent back to the mainland to join a sea going ship. Not a lot of young boys made it at that time. From the 1940鈥檚 onwards, they went down on the Hood and Royal Oak, but I ended up on the Battleship King George V, getting five medals; one anniversary, one Maltese and two anniversary Russian. One, I found myself going around all those countries I went to on my Mediterranean cruises. Only this time I was firing shells at them. My old Liner went right through the war as a Trooper and was broken up in 1958.
