Edited transcript of a taped interview with Herbert Nicholls
There was rumours all the time, you know, and there was talk of a ship coming, then it arrived, and it was there with the big red cross on, red and white. That was the excitement, everybody was waiting for their Red Cross parcels, They were beautifully packed. Once we unpacked them, you couldn鈥檛 pack them up again not like that. For the older ones there was cigarettes and things like that, for different ages they varied a bit. Some used to eat them all in two days, others used to ration themselves. There were so many break-ins and that, people used to take them to bed with them. I don鈥檛 think there were any New Zealand. It was mainly Canadian. I think there was more Canadian than New Zealand, well, bigger country. And when we had the first bread, it was as white as anything. Well, it seemed white.
