During the war I lived with my parents at Number 4 Hazelwood Cottages on the Alfold Road out of Cranleigh. My most vivid memory of the war was one night in 1942 when I was awakened by an almighty bang and I realized I could not move because the whole ceiling had fallen in on top of me. My parents were relieved to find I was not hurt and when we looked out of the window we could see a German bomber in the field across the road and the impact had caused the damage and not a bomb as we first thought.
I remember the bird cage was upside down on the floor but the canary was the right way up and still singing.
As far as I recall the crew had either baled out or were dead
