This story was submitted to the BBc peoples war with the permission of Terri Turner. The interviewer was Brian Morgan. The author fully understands the site's terms and conditions.

One night, when I had returned home to the Kings Road from camp, I was setting the table for dinner in the dining room when I heard the most peculiar noise. It was at sundown and I went out to the kitchen and I said ‘mum theres a very funny noise outside’ to which she replied it’s the people going to the hills’ ‘What do you mean’ I asked, to which my Mother answered ‘every night when it starts to get dark people come up from the Newtownards Road and all the small streets in that area as they are very close to Short Brothers Factory and the Ship Yard. So they leave and come up to the Gilnahirk Hills for their own safety from the German bombers.’ It was the most 'eerie' sound as people were walking, not marching. And every night when it was just getting dusk the people would just start walking up. You really felt so sorry for the people having to leave their houses and stay there all night in the cold and wet. The noise really was so 'eerie'.

I've just read Terri Turner's memory of the footsteps and felt like saying "snap" as I've just written about my memories living on the Lisburn Road. What I remembered was the footsteps coming back down the Black Mountain.
Most of Belfast must have been sleeping in the hills at that time.
