Mum, Dad and myself always had our two weeks holiday at the end of August. The year 1939 will be remembered because we were away at Ashingdon in Essex. The last two nights that we were there had been blackout practice. My Dad, who went to the pub for an hour, could not find his way back to the bungalow in the pitch black, having to navigate the unmade road and a cinder footpath. When we arrived home to Lewisham on 2nd September there were hardly any children, as nearly every child had been evacuated to the country
A bright sunny day dawned on 3rd September, when it was announced that war had been declared. Then the air raid sirens sounded and all of the neighbours came on to their front steps, wondering what would happen next.
