I was in the Women's Volunteer Service (the WVS). We were responsible for feeding the air raid wardens. It brought about my war injury!
We had to take the meals out at night. There were no lights on because of the blackout and it was pitch dark. One night I was carrying an enamel basin with an enamel plate over the top to keep the food hot. I had my tin hat on and was concentrating really hard on keeping hold of that dinner. I kept my eyes fixed on the basin and took small, careful steps. The next thing I knew I'd walked into a post box! The enamel plate shot up into my chin and cut me. I still have the mark to this day!
