Lance Corporal Alexander Barr 193 Field Ambulance R.A.S.C.
A SOLDIERS VIEW鈥橲 ON 鈥楩RAT鈥
Montgomery says 鈥渄on鈥檛 fraternise鈥
I鈥檓 not sure the decision鈥檚 wise
It doesn鈥檛 do the Hun much good
It makes the soldier look darned rude.
The German frauleins laugh and smile
And exercise their every wile
Poor 鈥楾ommy鈥 daren鈥檛 even grin
Or else he鈥檚 鈥榮ticking out鈥 his chin.
Because he鈥檚 had the awful warning
It鈥檚 a crime to even say 鈥淕ood morning鈥
If heard, these awful words to say
It鈥檚 sure to cost a full week鈥檚 pay.
He can give chocolate to a child
But here鈥檚 what gets the soldier riled
All thanks expressed by kiddy鈥檚 mummy
He must ignore, just like a 鈥榙ummy鈥
The Germans we must educate
To be a quiet, peaceful state
To 鈥楾ommy鈥 this seems just a joke
How can he educate these folk-
When forced to walk with mien grim
It hurts the Germans less than him
To build a really lasting peace
Non-Frat will simply have to cease
The British soldier wants to smile
A cheerful face is well worth while
The 鈥楾ommy鈥檚鈥 famous sense of fun
Can help re-educate the Hun.
