Mrs Irene Gosset interviewed by John Gaisford and Rosie Mere
Transcribed and edited by John David from audio and video recordings

My mother I think was hanging out some washing. I think she had to use soda , it took the skin off her hands, but the soap that they brought from France, that was something. I don’t know what it was made of, but it was like green putty. When it was wet it was like having lumps of green putty in your hands with lots of pieces of grit
I…… it was greeny, sort of squidgy, was it?
Mrs Gosset. I don’t know what it was made of. but. You know, just like…
I…… seaweed? Would that have made it green?
Mrs Gosset. Green, yes it was green, so I can’t think what it was, and then I always remember some of the wool they brought, we did a lot of knitting we used to rip jumpers and things and that, you know, But the wool, it had a lot of like shavings in it, so I don’t know if it was made from wood, or what it was made from, but there were all these little bits like shavings
I…… perhaps it was from the sheep, they had just shorn them, because sheep’s wool often has bits of grass and wood in, but usually they spend a lot of time taking that out…
