It was 7:30 am the landing crafts were letting their ramps into the water, the troops were let off. The skipper said “fire at anything that moves “. There were snipers everywhere. The frightening thing about it was there was no room to move. There was the odd German plane flying over we were firing at them, there were waves of firing, everybody was firing. The smoke was thick like fog and the smell was horrifying. There were cows and horses lying dead everywhere on the beach rotting. 2000 men were lost the first day, the bodies were buried in small shallow graves. I never saw a medic. I was there about 14 or 15 weeks without washing facilities and we only had tinned food
