My father was in the Royal Navy and in the Merchant navy before the war. During the war he was sunk twice once was on a trip from England to the North of Russia while they were taking food to Russia. The first time his ship went down he was picked up by the Americans, so he loved the Americans my father did, thought they were wonderful. A year after he went down again and was once again picked up by Americans, that was why he loved Americans, they saved his life twice. On one of these trips to Russia to drop food off, the ship was frozen in, they couldn鈥檛 move for three months. They weren鈥檛 hit because all the time they were there it was dark but they couldn鈥檛 get any food so all they had to live on for three months was rice.
