I was a fitter / armourer in the RAF in various stations in this country. Then I was stationed in Northern Nigeria. Our planes couldn鈥檛 fly over Europe to the Italian front, but they could fly from Africa.
In the troop ship going to Nigeria a mine went off and I slipped down narrow steps damaging the base of my spine. I spent the rest of the war in pain.
In Nigeria there were many crashes on landing in the soft sand. On one occasion we made one good plane from three damaged ones!
