Hitchin Museum has worked in partnership with organisations around Hitchin, Hertfordshire, including The British Schools Museum, Hitchin, North Hertfordshire District Council's 50+ Development Team, North Herts College, The Signals Museum at RAF Henlow, Codicote Historical Society, and many individual volunteers.
The partnership's main aims were (1) to collect wartime reminiscences from North Hertfordshire residents with the help of volunteers, and to add them to the ´óÏó´«Ã½'s archives to provide unique insights in to life in wartime Hitchin and (2) to help people of all ages and backgrounds throughout the local area to remember or learn about and to celebrate the end of hostilities 60 years ago.
The Hitchin Partnership acknowledges with thanks a Home Front Recall Grant from the UK Big Lottery Fund which funded events throughout 2005. These included:
- wartime evacuee days for school classes with a workshop at the museum, followed by an evacuation across town to the British Schools Museum for a wartime classroom experience
- "VE Day" parties for schoolchildren alongside veterans.
- a 1940's Big Band evening, admission 10 shillings.
- a number of reminiscence sessions and displays at the museum and in the neighbouring villages.
