At the beginning of the war I was 7 years of age and living in Guernsey Ch. Islands. As at June 1940 my father and mother together with my twin brother were evacuated from Guernsey ten days before it was occupied by the Germans. We travelled by boat to Weymouth where we docked outside for some time because the harbour entrance was mined. On getting into the harbour we disembarked and boarded a train. At that time we did not know where we were bound!! We ended up in Glasgow. We were only allowed one suitcase per person the rest of the house contents had to be abandoned. Our bungalow was used by the Germans to house slave labour who were building fortifications on the island.

On arrival at Glasgow men and boys were all assembled in a large hall while ladies and girls went to another area. We spent the first two days trying to find our mother. Our first breakfast was porridge with an ample portion of salt. This proved to be unpopular and was sent back!! The Scottish people were very kind and we found them to be wonderful hosts.

My mother鈥檚 parents and two of her sisters came to Hereford as evacuees and at this time air raids were taking place over Glasgow and my Mother鈥檚 parents made contact and suggested that we join them in Hereford. My father booked a taxi to take us from Glasgow to Hereford and including the return journey the cost was 拢18 (Old Money).

We were billeted with a Miss Medwin and Miss Lord at Broomy Hill. Miss Medwin was a retired Headmistress. My brother and I attended the Cathedral School in Hereford. Although we like everyone else were rationed we did not go short. We were very well looked after by our hosts who we stayed in contact with until they passed away.

The second world war was our introduction to Herefordshire and I have lived here ever since.
