Returning from India
Father was stationed in India when war broke out but in June 1940, was sent back to England in the Suez while we stayed in India.
We left in October 1940 鈥攁fter a three day train journey, with all the bridges guarded by Indian troops, we embarked on the P&O Ocades, with a complement of about half New Zealand troops and half women and children. We sailed from Bombay to Greenock, stopping at Cape Town and Freetown in Sierra Leone. The NZ troops used to entertain the children with their Hooka dances, etc.
The ship was escorted by an armed merchant ship and later by a new destroyer.
We were very lucky, as the 鈥淓mpress of Britain鈥 which was also half troops and half families, was sunk, 24 hours in front of us.
