After the war I was conscripted; I applied for the King`s Regiment but ended up in the Pay Corps; but I`d learned German at school (much to the disgust of fellow pupils) and ended up in a special unit. I saw a lot of the damage in Europe.
Cologne Cathedral was heavily damaged - but there on the altar was the Reliquery of the Three Kings, shining and untouched.
Later I went to Vienna at the time when The Third Man was being filmed. I still have a piece of stone I knocked off the corner of the sewer that Harry Lime was supposed to have died in. I`ve used it as a paperweight and it is now quite shiny. I saw Trevor Howard but not Orson Wells.
On one occasion my work partner 鈥淪plit鈥 Cannings (so called because he was very accident-prone and often had fractures - I`ve lost touch with him and am sad about that) and I went onto the ferris wheel that features in the film. We were almost at the top when my eye strayed to the back of the seat in front of us; the label read 鈥淢ade in Birmingham鈥. Ironic.
