Operation Zipper was hoped to be a success, to retake Malaya after being over taken from the Japanese garrison troops. What I had to do was tow a number of gliders by air to be dropped at the designated target area. Starting out from Burma we set off on the 1000 mile trip only relizing along the way we had not enough fuel to return. We were instructed by our commanding officer to ditch the gliders and return to base. I'm glad they dropped the atomic bomb as we did not have to go in the end. Operation Zipper had been canclled. we were told after, by our air chiefs, that 80% of our aircraft where likly to have been lost and deemed to be acceptable.
