A US bomber took off from Bassingbourne air field. It was attacked by a German plane straight away and it emptied its incendiary bombs onto a hill close to where I lived. The whole hill was on fire. All the local women and children rushed out up the hill to put out the fires. We shovelled earth onto the bombs and got the fires out before the troops arrived from the US air base. They said we could have all been killed but we had survival instinct.
(This story was collected at the Severn Valley Railway 1940s weekend and submitted to the People's War site by a volunteer from Wyre Forest Volunteer Bureau on behalf of Molly Chambers and has been added to this site with her permission. Mrs Chambers fully understands the site's terms and conditions.)
