"No [holidays] you tried to [go away for the day], but you couldn鈥檛 go very far, I mean transport was, so much of it was taken over by the forces. I don鈥檛 think my father missed a day going to the City. I mean, he was company secretary to this big company, and he was like a kingpin really. As well as that he was private secretary to William Wingfield, who was a member of the Digby Wingfield family from Dorset. Life had to go on. There was more, what shall I say, support, people gave each other support, helped each other, and sadly that鈥檚 rather lacking today. [The seaside] was all barbed-wired, a lot of it was like that. Oh, everything was guarded. You had the army on guard all around the coast."
