A place in history for Chatton - Billy Green (Jackson Green from Wandon his father) who at the time lived at West Lyham was Head Observer for the Royal Observer Corps for the area. He was not on duty this day but had called at the post which was situated at the top of the ‘Sandy Lonnen’ in Chatton to see the two people whom were on duty at the time. Billy spotted a Messerschmitt flying over head and reported it to the headquarters in Durham, they came back to say that this was not possible as a Messerschmitt would not have had enough fuel to get back to Germany, in his own words he told the headquarters that it was a Messerschmitt!!! The plane was picked up again at Millfield and the plane eventually landed in Lanarkshire. Rudolph Hess was flying the Messerschmitt solo and it was reported that he was on his way to meet the Duke of Hamilton to discuss peace.
