I was 8 years old when WW2 started and went to Elswick Road School. There were 116 girls sent to Wallington Hall, home of Sir Charles and Lady Treveleyon. It was only about 1 hr ride in the bus from Newcastle. I was put in the Long Gallery (now the tea rooms) with about another twenty girls. The rest slept in the main hall. I remember Lady Treveleyon taking us down to the river Wansbeck and gave us swimming lessons. I knew the names of all the birds and trees. We did potato picking and we were paid for this (I can鈥檛 remember how much) and spent it at the little post office in Cambo. We used to walk up to the Church every Sunday and later on. I took my confirmation classes and was later confirmed in Morpeth. I remember Halloween night was great fun we played games and Lady Treveleyon would play piano and we danced all around the hall. We came home all the school holidays and one night an incendiary bomb was dropped on St Michael鈥檚 Church on Westmorland Road (about 3 streets away from my home) and that was the only time I wanted to go back to Wallington as I was so frightened. I was evacuated till I was 13 陆 years old (5 陆 years). I went to Elswick Road School for 6 months and then I went to work at the Co-op.
