Jill Chubb interviewed at Guernsey Museum, by Becky Kendall of 大象传媒 Radio Guernsey 12/2/2005, and recorded onto CD. Transcribed by J David 21/11/2005

We were deported to Germany when I was two, because my father was English. Now he was only six months old when he was brought here by my grandmother, but he was still an English man, although he married a Guernsey lady, and all the English people were deported to Germany, to Biberach. It was either English officers, or family men, and they went with their families, so that鈥檚 why we went. I remember lots of things, I don鈥檛 remember specific facts, but because I was so little, it made an impression. The first thing I remember was going on a boat, I remember that we were supposed to go, and then we didn鈥檛 go, to Germany, and we had to wait a few weeks, I remember that. Then I remember being on this boat, and we were in a cargo hold, and we were down below, and trying to find places to sit, I think we had lamps there. Lots of noise, I think we had to wait for it to clear before we could get into St Malo. We didn鈥檛 take much with us, we had very little, and we were in this cattle truck for two days, and then the train stopped, and my father jumped out to get water, I think all the men did, I think the train had stopped to get water on board, and I remember all the guards chasing them back, shouting in German, my mother screaming 鈥淐ome back, come back,鈥 he was desperate to get water for us, you see. And then we made it to Biberach.
I鈥︹︹. Going back to before Biberach, I know you were very small at the time, but you must have picked up some feelings, were you badly treated, or taken by force,
We weren鈥檛 very well treated, I remember going up to the camp with my parents, with my mum, and the Hitler Youth spitting on us as we were going up, it was a long walk, five miles I think we walked, and I wanted to spit back, because that was my nature, you know, if you do that to me I鈥檒l do that to you, you know, my mother was saying 鈥淒on鈥檛 do it, don鈥檛 do it鈥.
