Hazel Rutherford, Belford
My husband was a prisoner of war in Japan during the war and he was released a few days after the Americans had dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshoma. When he was realeased, he was in very poor condition, he 6ft 2" and weighed 6 stone! He described some awful scenes from Japan and that there had been a lot of destruction by the bombing from the Americans. He was put on to the Queen Mary and he went home the long way round America. In fact, he came home with a lot of souvenirs including as cigar from the Queen Mary. When he got home, his teeth had rotted and he was still in a very poor condition. He received 6 weeks paid leave and then he had to return to work! As well as being a sergnant in the army he was also a builder and that was very tough on him.
