I was 5 in 1939 going to Welbeck Street school to collect gas mask and identity card. Took the mask to school for a short period before it stopped. We practised using it - they were horrible. At this time I lived in St Mary's Place off Saville Road close to ROP (Russian Oil and Petrol)which had large containers and we were next to the chemical works. There was an air raid shelter in the street but we never used it as it was dirty. Instead we used the space under the stairs. I don't remember being afraid but two of our neighbours were afraid and came to us if there was a raid.
D-Day was exciting I went to a friends house in the Potteries, the radio was on saying that the troops had landed in Normandy.
There wasn't much bombing of Castleford we thought it was an accident and that they were aiming for Leeds.
