I worked on the pit top during the War. I lived with my grandma, I remember having to queue up at the butchers for meat. When the sirens went off we had to go down into the cellar with Grandma. I also remember that we had a tin bath in the kitchen, Friday night was our bath night.
I went into the Army just after the war, I was in the Duke of Wellington鈥檚 and stationed in Berlin. I was driving a long time, lorries sometimes. On guard duty I was at Spandau West where Rudolf Hess was a prisoner.
I only came home once whilst in Germany, I was glad when it was all over and I got back home.
