Part One.
I was 10 years old when The War broke out, living in Wolverhampton.
Some early memories - going down to The Anderson Shelter in the middle of the night, listening to the Ack Ack Guns (local gun batteries).
Next morning we collected shrapnel (bits of pieces of the heads of Shells) which had fallen in the gutters.
At School there were holes in the playground made by The Incendiary Bombs. My Father was in the Local Defence Volunteers (fore runners of The Home Guard) and had a Sten Gun.
My Mother worked at the local factory where she assembled Hand Grenades.
I was an ARP (Air Raid Precautions) messenger.
Part Two.
A memory of Cosford Camp (my Grandfather lived in Sydnal Lane)
was of the Horsa Gliders that were parked on the edge of the runways.
My Father was a Regular Soldier and one of my memories is watching The Soldiers marching (I think on their return from Dunkirk). There was much cheering and clapping, but as a little girl of six, I didn't really appreciate what was going on.
We left Whittington then and my next memory is of a huge crater in a churchyard in Darlaston.
