When peace in Europe was declared in May 1945 I was a ten year old pupil at Broadstone School, near Poole in Dorset. We were asked by our teacher to write a composition about the formal German surrender. This is what I wrote (complete with errors in punctuation and spelling mistakes!) -
The declaration of peace
It is a famous street in Berlin the building is a dreary house which used to serve as an Engineering College inside are two long tables. On one table are seated the Russian, British, American and French delegates and the other table is empty. At last the German delegates arrive headed by field marshal Kietel. They take their places and the signing is ready to begin. Marshal Zhoukov asks Marshal Kietel if he agrees, the answer is 鈥測es I agree鈥. In a few minutes the declaration is signed and it is all over. Marshal Zhoukov says the german delegates may leave.
For this 鈥渕asterpiece鈥 I was given 鈥淰.G. for composition鈥 by my teacher - I still have it.
