Lance Corporal Alexander Barr, 193 Field Ambulance RASC
SALUTE TO THE SCOTTISH INFANTRY.
Gey sad was I, when I left hame
tae fecht against the Hun
I never thoucht I’d be sae lang awa’
But noo the day is near when we’ll
hae Jerry on the run
For Hitler’s gang, the writings’s on the wa’
There’s braw lads frae the Hielans, and frae every
Lowland shire
There’s men that spent their youth ahin’ the ploo’
But noo they’re efter Jerry, an’
they fecht wi’ Scottish fire
An’ haud your braith, there’s
Welsh an’ English too.
Noo we’re on the road tae victory
we’ll sune be hameward
bound
Aince mair tae lead a quiet
peacefu’ life
Back in the shops and factories
or plooin’ up the ground
We’ll sune forget the bloodshed
an’ the strife.
But aye we’ll hae fond memories
o’ frienships made oot here
An’ we’ll often think o’ bonny
lads that fell
An’ even when the evening o’ oor
lives is drawing near
The story o’ their valiant deeds
we’ll tell
