When the war started I liked being evacuated to Weston Super Mare, Kewstoke. But I went privately; I was an only one. My parents sent me privately, and I was in with a family of six , which was very nice because there were three grown-up girls, there was a daughter the same age as myself and her brother which was two or three years older. And, we went to the little school, which was the village school, which had two rooms; one for the seven to elevens, and the ones below seven from five; and one teacher; and you sat in a row according to your age. But you didn't really learn anything so my schooling was very much behind, which is one of the things that, erm, you know, you've got no chance of catching up in that amount of time really. But I don't consider that I have done too badly.
Oh, I loved being evacuated, along with the family. The girls used to go out dancing and we used to have them, they used to stand on a chair and we used to sand their legs and put the line down, for them, the stockings; and we used to go along and peer through the village hall windows to see what was going on, and hope that we weren't caught by them; cos they used to 'twit' on us.
