By the middle of 1940 I was a junior NCO with the london area signal company LASCO .WE operated from st johns wood barracks at ordenance hill
at first I was billeted in an emty house in Acacia Road opposite , I think it was a No, 9 and i was put in the attic . the house was a rich mans dwelling the floors were all marble it had water sfteners etc. and with many suadies metal inforced boots it was quickly ruind.
Anyway our units job was to keep army comunications going , ther was a high powerd radio trans mitter at thr war office in whitehal, it wasnot a war deparment the just on pffice.
then we had low powered radio stations at green park stores yard and green park duck island. fulham and windsor where \i seem to remember the king went evey night , i am not sure .
the stations went on net every hour , and the arny did not seem to have heard of telephones . all signals were in code .
lt was LASCOS jb to keep it all working
all stations except were driven buy large car type batterries . it took two to lft one .
we were not allowed to charge the batteries off the public mains but were given a STUART TURNER PTROL ELECTRIC GENERATOR AND DOZENS OF CANS OF POOL PETROL.
the batteries were taken by van to all stations .
On one particular night i was duty radio mechanic and in cofusion i sent dud batteries to Windsor..
this as far as i can remember got me a court marshall. thecarmy atv windsor was cout off .
I used to have to go to various guards brigades to sort out any troubles they had with their radios the guards sergents were marvellous mun absolutely unflapsble but they did not understand radio.
WEW were completely unpreared for war my first radio transmitter repare was a No,1 set it pushedout % watts and was made to go on a donkey ther were two pack an onwas put overceach side of the back
a counterpoise earth was thowwn out and a pole took th ariel.
must go will give more advetures in next writing.
