I lived in London and during the blitz we used to leave the house every evening and trekked down the road to the nearest park where there were under ground shelters. There was only wooden seating and the adults mostly sitting up but the children lay down and brought blankets and eiderdowns from their homes, at daybreak we went back home and then had a few hours sleep before school. We could see the sky over central London glowing red from the fires.
