In my main article I wrote of my stay at Bawdsey Manor. The recent programme on he 大象传媒 of restoration brought to mind memories of my period at Bawdsey.
After my initial training and a short spell of leave I reported at Bawdsey for my training.
The lecture rooms and recreational facilities were in the main house. We were billeted in huts nearby. I recall the buildings and towers along the cliff tops
and the garden walks.
There was an old single decker bus between Felixstowe across the golf course to the ferry. The driver cum conductor was a
somewhat butch type of woman who controlled the passengers on the bus with a great strictness. The passengers were mainly servicemen returning to Bawdsey by way of the ferry across the river estuary. We were warned about the strength of the tides and on a visit to the area some years later I found this to be true.
At the completion of my training it was necessary to use the ferry to get to the train station in Felixstowe. I think it had been raining but everywhere was very damp and the ferry jetty was quite wet. I had to be the one to slip but fortunately I and my kit remaind on the jetty and dry.
I read that the house is now a small residential hotel.
