Childhood memories from Braustone.
It is the little things one remembers and looks back on. As a child my sister was rather sickly, thus we were allowed an extra coal ration. One day( I must have been about 8) I noticed the new lady who had moved opposite, had no fire and was very cold. Mum was out at work, so I had the bright idea of selling some of ours!! 2-/- I charged. Sweets had just come back into the shops,so off I went and bought 4 Mars Bars, and ate them one after the other! I still remember sitting on the kerb, and refusing to let my brothers and sisters have a taste...I couldn't face them again til I was 20! Of course Mum found out, a neighbout had seen my carrying the coal. I got a good hiding..although my Mum and the new neighbour stayed friends until the end of their days.
I also remember the Americans, based on Braunstone Park, we used to go hang near the fence for some sweets. One Bonfire night, they were curious to why we were collecting odd bits and bobs of wood, we explained the story of Guy Fawkes, and how we celebrated. Lo and behold come early evening down they came in their trucks, full of apples and oranges, I had my first banana, and tried to eat it complete with skin...well I didnt know!! I still don't think you can beat the flavour of real jacket spuds thrown in the burning embers of a bonfire.
Other memories, a plane coming down near us, and the pilot parachuting out. Within a week all females on Heyford Road were wearing Parachute silk knickers.
I also remember the German POW's, based at Stoughton, they laid the concrete bases for the prefabs on Hinckley and Hockley Farm Road, as my name was Lilian they always use to sing Lily Marlene to me when I went by.
