On V.E.Day I went up to London from Streatham. The crowds were immense, the noise horrendous but everyone happy and laughing and singing and all greeting one another. I do not remember how I got there but at one point I was outside Buckingham Palace. There must have been thousands and thousands of people there and one just could not move. What struck me most was the heat from all the bodies - it was overpowering. I became very frightened and wanted to get away. I really feared I would faint and be trampled on. I did eventually get free from the crowds - and have never gone in once since.
