I understand that my late father, Bernard Downes, was a radio operator in Lancaster Bombers, and also for part of WWII also worked at Bletchley Park. However, he was also an accomplished piano player -- in later life playing and accompanying around clubs in Yorkshire. His accomplishments as a piano player meant that he quite often was requested to play at various officers messes. I understand that at one time, he was even flown at the dead of night to Cairo, where they were in urgent need of a piano player. If anyone knows of my father, or his brother, Stuart (who was unfortunately killed very early on in the war, over Malta, when his Spitfire was shot down) I would be grateful to hear from them.
