I was in St John鈥檚 Ambulance when I was 15. When the sirens sounded in Royston it was my job to run to the Town Hall and go down to the cellar which was set up as a first aid station and an operating theatre. There were 30 stretchers on the floor. I remember the first casualty I had to deal with. Someone rushed into the First Aid station and shouted Molly you鈥檙e needed. An RAF girl had been run over in the High Street. She was cycling back to her base in the dark and an army truck had hit her bicycle. Her head was bleeding and I could see that she was badly injured. She died in my arms there on the street.
(This story was collected at the Severn Valley Railway 1940s weekend and submitted to the People's War site by a volunteer from Wyre Forest Volunteer Bureau on behalf of Molly Chambers and has been added to this site with her permission. Mrs Chambers fully understands the site's terms and conditions.)
