When the War started i was three and a half and living in Walthamstow,East London with my mother and father, Flo and Earnest Sears. I wasn't evacuated as part of the government scheme but after a few months my mother and i went to live with my father's mother and sister near Chelmsford in a small village. My mother worked for a farmer when we were at Chelmsford, mainly picking peas. She used to take me with her when i wasn't at school, supposidly to help! My dad's sister worked at Marconi's factory in Chelmsford, on war work and also at a shirt factory, making shirts for soldiers. My mum's sister joined the A.T.S (Auxillary Territorial Service).
I have vivid memories of this time, even though i was only small. Memories like sitting in a tin bath in my nan's kitchen and my dad coming to tell us he had joined the Navy and taking me back to Walthamstow to collect my doll's pram-i think i was about four and a half then.
We stayed about 15 months then went back to London, because it seemed safe to do so. Of course the bombing got worse so about a year later we went to stay with my mother's mother, hfather and sister, who had moved out of London to rural Clacton-on-Sea , where we stayed for about 9 months.
