I was watching the "Breakfast with Frost" program on 大象传媒1 last Sunday 08-05-05. David was introducing Alan Wicker Humphrey Littleton and Lord Peter Carrington, regarding their War experiences in the second world war. He said "we will start with you Peter you crossed the river Rhine and I believe you liberated a concentration camp as you advanced on " at this moment "Sandbostel" flashed through my mind......seconds later Peter replied "Oh yes an atroucious place called "SANDBOSTEL" this to me was uncanny I had been to Sandbostel during my army service, and had never heard it mentioned anywhere before, though it stuck in my mind.
It was many months after the camp had been liberated when I was assigned to give a film show to a british army unit stationed there, all traces of the horrors of the concentration camp had long gone, there were German prisoners kept there, and work parties of them were taken daily to dig up bodies from the former camp, their graves marked with just numbered wooden strips, and then reburying them in proper graves with head stones.
I got to talking to a fellow soldier stationed here, and he said "Before you leave, take a walk down the road to the edge of the town, through a shallow forest and you will behold a site which you may find difficult to believe".
I made that walk, and as I emerged from the forest area there was a clearing, a huge Cemetery with hundreds of Marble head stones, some were really enormous,it seemed to be mainly Russian & Polish, on one of the larger stones it depicted 65,000 were laid to rest there.
It must have been sheer hell in those early days, and Major Peter Carrington and the liberators must have felt really sick.
This place though not as widely known as Auschwitz or Belsen was indeed on a par with these terrible places.
I have since researched the Concentration Camp at Sandbostel on one of the Internet Search Engines, there is much information there, but it really is Sickening, such a terrible thing must never be allowed to happen anywhere on Earth again.
