Jim and his brother Tom who lived in Albion Street, Murton were sitting on the family sea chest in front of the window, watching the German planes. His Mother was shouting to them to come into the bedrooms. They heard the bomb dropping and Jim was blown off the sea chest onto all fours, then he scrambled underneath the bed and into the indoor air raid shelter. His Mam shouted come on Tom, hurry up and get out of the way. Tom replied I'm not coming until I find my arm! Tom's arm was resting on the window sill and it had gone numb with the blast from the bomb and he didn't realise what had happened. That bomb killed families in Princess Street.
The family still has that sea chest, which has a picture of Whitby Harbour when you lift the lid.
The same night I was living in Toft Crescent, Murton when we were watching a German plane in the cross of the searchlight beam. We were looking through my bedroom window, Mother, Father, 2 Brothers, Myself, Aunt and her son Colin. We could see all the ack ack tracer firing at the plane when they shot the plane. We were all cheering that it could drop no more bombs on us. Except for Auntie Elsie who was crying her eyes out, sobbing 'this is some Mother's son shot down'. We tried to comfort her that it could no longer drop any more bombs.
The next day children were looking for souvenirs and came to school with perspex from which the plane windows were made. They did this even though this was a restricted area!
