This story is transcribed by me Graham Shepherd , from an article provided by Brenda Rogers , and will be added to the site with her permission . She understands the sites terms and conditions .
I was living in Trefonen when war broke out , and without the intervention of the war I would simply have got married or worked at the corner shop , because that was what local girls did .
This gave me an opportunity to leave home and since I had a very strict father , I made the most of it and made a life for myself .
I went into munitions , first at Marchweil near Wrexham and then , ironically , while Coventry industry was coming out to north Shropshire for safety , I was sent to work in Coventry where very significant bombs were dropped .
We wore trousers and turbans and yes , things did change for me and people like me .
The war certainly altered my life ; my health for one thing - we worked with what turned out to be dangerous powder .
I remember many street parties and celebrations around the area which finally marked the end of the war .
I went to work at a local cafe , the Coach and Dogs , and was later married at Trefonen Church ..
