Used to be on fire watching rota, stirrup pump as big as me. Was at home looking after the house, then directed to war work at Wilmot and Breedon, made car parts for army lorry. Then worked in the canteen there. Worked with old men retired from the war.
Sometimes the chef would give me a hock to take home. Was looking after a household as well and constantly queuing for food off ration. Only a teenager at the time.
We had a party in the street, with a piano. We ate party things (mostly cake), with dancing. Some of the grown ups went to the pub.
Used to be up half the night with air raids.
