During the war my grandfather's farm was partially taken over by the army as a live ammo training area. During this period many different units came to stay in barracks which were build at the farm whilst they underwent live fire training.
At one stage, during a very cold winter, probably late in the war, the Canadian soldiers staying in the barracks at the time were beset with mice, which were causing them considerable annoyance.
My grandparents' cat had just had kittens, much to the excitement of my mother and uncles and once they were a few weeks old my grandmother gave these kittens to the Canadian soldiers to help them deal with their mouse problem. Apparently the Canadians were very pleased with this situation. My mother and uncles were less happy that their kittens had been taken away from them and given away to the soldiers.
