Message 1 - winchelsea 1943 - feedback

Posted on: 10 January 2004 by Carey - WW2 Site Helper

Hallo, Pamela, I'm Carey, one of the Writing Buddies here on the WW2 site.

Thank you for taking the time to post.

Perhaps if you could tell us your mum's name and your stepsisters' names, and perhaps more specifics about where you will living and when this raid occurred, it would be helpful to other contributors or researcher looking at the site to help make contact with you.
Can you tell us anything about your family during this time? As you lost your mum in the raid, who looked after you?

Please do not hesitate to contribute any further information!

cheers,
Carey

Hallo! Lovely to hear from you.

I did read your other piece -- just astonishing. It must have been very difficult for you to learn about your mum, and your own circs.

If you would like to, of course we would encourage you to write in more detail, perhaps with names, as it may encourage others to write, and also for those who are reading the stories on the site to gain an insight on the War, to understand that it wasn't all adventures...there was much tragedy from the highest to the lowest. You see, it is well documented locally, but we have so many visitors to the site who are scattered throughout the world, and may not be able to see the original newspaper archives, etc.

I do understand that you may not wish to go into more detail, as it is a very sensitive and painful topic. What you have written stands as a stark reminder on its own, and we do thank you for writing about it, to help the archive here to present a full picture of all aspects and effects of the War.

Do take care,
best,
Carey

My father died a year ago and amongst his papers about himself and the war years he had written a brief account of the time he was stationed in Winchelsea. His name was Edward Crosby Barber but everyone knew him as Ted, He was from Caernarvon in N.Wales, and with the Royal Welsh Fusiliers.

In his own words.....

In 1942/1943 I was staioned in the South east of England where air raids were a regular pattern of daily life. About Dec 1942/Jan 1943 a member of the unit shot down an enemy plane with Bren gun fire. A short while after the enemy retaliated by bombing the village in a breakfast time sneak raid. This was on January 13th 1943 at Winchelsea, Sussex.

Although I was knocked over by the blast of one of these bombs I escaped
injury. However a short while after I noticed I had become deaf in one ear.

Whilst dad tried to hide this fact for a while, it was discovered when after this he was sent on sniper training and whilst he could still hear somethings on that right side he could not tell from which direction.

His war did not end here as he was moved to HQ Port Detachment RASC and embarked for Normandy August 24th 1944, made his way eventually to Antwerp were he met my Belgian mother the rest is another story.......

my father sustained injuries to his back.where he went to after that i still do not know.
