I had a cousin Albert Hibbert who was extremely good looking. Albert lived on Tank Street at Riddings in Derbyshire with his mum and dad, Sarah and Fred Hibbert. Before the war he worked as a miner, during the war Albert was a rear gunner. Unfortunately, Albert was blown up at an airfield in Lincolnshire. The plane was taking off on a bombing raid but blew up on take off, the bombs had activated. The RAF brought his coffin home for him to be buried at Riddings churchyard. Uncle Fred was so distressed, he wanted to see his son, he wanted the coffin opening, there were no chapels of rest at that time and he just wanted to see him. The undertaker said to my mother, who as well as being Freds sister was the person in the village that was called upon for births deaths and marriages and worked alongside the undertaker "get him out of the room Mrs Perkins whilst I have a look in the coffin". When he looked in the coffin there was nothing there but a bag of cement and some bricks. Thats what they buried in Riddings churchyard with full military honours.
