HMS Wasp, Dover. Late 1939/early 1940. Julie Searles and a daughter (Sylvia?) of J.B.Priestley.
This is a very small part of a large Panoramic photograph taken of the personnel stationed at HMS Wasp in Dover.
It was taken late in 1939/early 1940, before the Dunkirk evacuation.
The Wren in the front wearing the leather sash and belt is a daughter (Sylvia?) of the author J.B.Priestley and behind her and slighly to the right, is my grandmother Julie Searles.
For more about Julie and the family please see my entry "Dover - Hellfire Corner Family Life"
The photo was taken near to the Train Ferry Dock and between Dover Marine Station and the Lord Warden Hotel. The latter was used as an administrative centre and mess for HMS Wasp and despite war damage, still stands today (March 2005).
Unfortunately the large panoramic photo is too big (too many KBs) to load to this site.
However it does show 130 Royal Navy officers and seamen and 42 wrens.
The whole photo can be seen at the "Service Pals" web site.
