Hi. My name is Roger Hurst and I was born in in 1945. My family lived in Dover throughout WW2 and my Great-Grandmothers diary is deposited with Dover Museum as a research document.
Lucy Matson kept her diary throughout her life but only the latter part survives. In my entry on this site I have added some other anecdotes from the family but the diary records day by day the attacks and events as Lucy went about her life.
She had been a band leader and her band played on the old Dover Pleasure Pier amongst other venues. She also played music for the silent cinema (at the Granada). In later life she taught the piano and continued to do so throughout WW2; a time when she became friends with the Dublin born bandleader Debroy Summers (She later became a friend of the band leader Edmundo Ross.)
Perhaps you were taught by her or you knew her through having bought a copy of her system to teach yourself to play a piano?
Please visit the entry (Dover " Hellfire Corner" - Family Life) and let me know if you recall any of the family or if you have read the documents held at the museum. I may be able to provide some more info. for you.
