One sunny day in May 1944, my pals and I were having our lunch break at school, when a great convoy of army vehicles, tanks ,trucks, troop carriers, came along Lewes Road outside our school.
The troops involved were American, mainly Black soldiers. The children all rushed to see these troops. The convoy decided to stop and the men got out their vehicles to rest on the grass at the side of the road. We started to talk to them and they began to hand out, sweets, gum and American comic books!HOw I loved those comics! With Superman, Batman, Captian Marvel and Tarzan and host of others.
The soldiers were a very tough bunch. turns out that they were on their to assemble on the south coast in preperation for the D day landings in Normandy on 6th of June 1944.
