ISABEL WEATHERLEY
During the war for most of us it was the first time we had seen a black American.
I was only 9 when the war began, so I didn鈥檛 know I called out 鈥渨hat鈥檚 this come down my chimney鈥? then all hell broke loose. We were out of bed downstairs and into the garden and my father had a long handled shovel especially for incendiary bombs and sand and shovelled it out into the garden.
We had AKAK guns and they used to drive round the streets and fire up at the German planes flying overhead. And just firing the guns would rattle the windows of the house. I don鈥檛 remember feeling fear 鈥 not us personally.
