[You were in the WAAFs]
I served here at home and overseas — Palestine, Egypt …
I was signals section. Teleprinter telephonist.
We never used to see very much daylight. We were always underground somewhere.
We had happy times, oh yes.
You were living so close together in the billets you had to get on with one another. It made for a happy family.
I went back in February this year. Very scary. My daughter was with me. Going around the pyramids, I wanted to see the things I couldn’t see the first time. We used to live in the desert in tents, and the RAF used to give us 6p a day for living in a tent. It was marvellous!
I came back from Palestine in 46. I was married in Palestine, spent my honeymoon.
The US Red Cross provided all my gear. The wedding dress, all the bridesmaids’ gear. It was quite a nice wedding. An Armoured Car took us through the rough patch we had to go through before we went up into the mountains at Einab in Syria, where we went for the honeymoon.
It was a service wedding.
[The church was a Nissan hut with a cross on it]
I served with the Canadians at Castle Archdale for 18 months. I had a wonderful time. I’d recommend it to anybody. Don’t think about it, go out and do it!
