As told by Mrs Ellen Gibbs

In the 1940s people were so hungry they ate apple cores and banana skins, because they couldn't get enough to eat. A whale was stranded here (North Woolwich), 20 feet long. People came and took the meat.

George was a desert rat and was at Dunkirk. He was in the Royal Engineers. He was posted out to the Middle Est three months after Dunkirk and then never came home until 1945. When he did, his daughter who was 3 when he left, didn't know him and he didn't know her - they passed in the street without recognising each other.

I (Mrs Gibbs) made munitions, bombs and bullets for him (Mr Gibbs) to fire!
