This month's collaborative article: Training for WW2

The 大象传媒 asked WW2 Members to add a short anecdote on the subject of training for WW2.

We asked the following questions:

  • Was the training difficult or unexpected?
  • How effective was your (or your subject's) training?
  • Did you make friends during training?
  • How did the training compare with the reality of war?

Message 1 - WW2 Training.

My main memories were as a very young 18 year old joining up at Lords Cricket ground in July 1943 and having an action packed two weeks being issued with uniform etcetera. Jabs for many posible infections, 100yds Swimming test at Wigmore Hall. Marching every where,jam-packed in commandeered flats.Completely different lifestyle.Followed by crammed 6 weeks at Torquay square bashing, Dingy drill in the sea. Eating hard tack occasionally instead of bread.Occasional strafe by FW190's
while marching along the seafront.Watching badly damaged American super-fortresses returning from a raid. All mail opened and checked by security. Having survived this we moved on to Aircrew training elsewhere.
